Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects an estimated 10 million people in the UK, making it the most common form of arthritis. Approximately 1 in 10 adults present with clinically symptomatic OA. This includes activity-related joint pain, stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes (especially in the morning or after inactivity), and reduced range of motion. Out of the 10 million, roughly 5.4 and 3.2 million live with knee and hip OA respectively. The effects of osteoarthritis range from mild, intermittent discomfort to severe, chronic pain that severely impacts daily mobility and overall quality of life.

Signs and symptoms?

  • Joint Pain

  • Joint Stiffness

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness

  • Grating or crackling sound when moving the affected joints

What are the commonly affected joints?

  • Knees: Pain and difficulty with walking, stairs, or standing.

  • Hips: Pain in the groin or buttock area, sometimes radiating to the knee.

  • Hands: Formation of hard, bony nodes, causing difficulty with fine motor tasks.

  • Spine: Stiffness and pain in the neck or lower back

What are the Progression of Symptoms?

  • Early OA: Intermittent, sharp pain with specific movements.

  • Mid-OA: Constant, predictable pain, with potential locking.

  • Advanced OA: Persistent, dull aching pain, significantly limited movement, and potential deformity

Should i consider shockwave therapy?

Focused shockwave therapy may be suitable for adults with:

  • Mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis

  • Persistent knee pain that interferes with daily life

  • Not yet requiring (or wishing to avoid) surgical options

How is focused shockwave therapy effective in Osteoarthritis?

Focused shockwave delivers concentrated, deeper-penetrating waves that reach structures within and around the joint, including cartilage, subchondral bone and soft tissues. This differs from traditional radial shockwave which spreads energy more broadly and superficially.

Emerging research supports the use of Focused shockwave therapy for knee OA, with studies showing improvements in pain relief, joint function, mobility and encouragement of tissue repair. Focused Shockwave Therapy offers a promising non-invasive treatment option for Knee OA.

While research is ongoing, and optimisation of treatment protocols continues, the evidence so far supports focused shockwave as a powerful tool in the conservative management of knee OA.

Please note that Focused shockwave therapy is always recommended to be used alongside exercises, lifestyle management strategies and medication.

What is Victor the Physio’s approach to managing Osteoarthritis?

My approach focuses on educating you on effective strategies that will support the long term management of the condition, reduce pain and slow functional decline. Modalities such as therapeutic exercise, hands on therapy and focused shockwave therapy are key tools i use in clinic to manage the condition.
