Musculoskeletal care for Basingstoke
Specialist care for hip pain in Basingstoke
What is hip pain?
Chronic hip pain affects 12-15% of people over 60 in the UK.
This can be problematic as the hip is essential for pretty much any form of movement such as walking, running, squatting and balancing. Impairment of the hip can significantly impair mobility, leading to a reduced quality of life. Common causes of hip pain include:
Hip impingement syndrome. Also known as Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome
Arthritis
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome. Also known as lateral hip pain or trochanteric bursitis
Injuries caused by falling, sporting activities or repetitive use of the joint
Sprain or strain caused by repetitive or intense exercise
My approach to treating hip problems starts with understanding the pathology. The nature of the condition will dictate the treatment approach taken. I believe in educating my clients in the pathology and treatment approach as it will empower them to remain complaint, reducing the risk of treatment failure.

Hip impingement is a common cause of hip and groin pain. It can affect people of all ages, including teenagers and young adults. Fortunately, several treatment options are available to relieve your symptoms, improve your quality of life and prevent the risk of long-term damage.
Hip impingement occurs when the femoral head and the acetabulum do not fit together properly. The femoral head can no longer glide smoothly within the socket, leading to unwanted symptoms like pain and discomfort.
Although the cause of hip impingement is not fully understood, several factors may contribute to its development, such as:
Previous hip disorders
Genetics
Intense sporting activities
The main symptom of hip impingement is pain which gradually worsens over time. This usually occurs in the hip or groin area and can extend to the lower back and legs.
Activities and movements that may exacerbate the pain include:
Jumping
Running
Riding a bike
Squatting
Driving
Sitting down for prolonged periods of time
