Dedicated back care for Basingstoke

Physiotherapy care for back pain in Basingstoke

What is back pain?

Back pain is the leading cause of disability, with over 10 million adults affected annually, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and frustrating conditions to navigate.

Often, treatment only focuses on the symptoms and does not address the multi-factors that are driving the discomfort. By treating your back pain through a wider clinical lens, I work to identify these factors and create a treatment strategy that promotes long-lasting physical resilience and symptom management.

Answering your back pain questions

  • There are symptoms to look out for which indicate more serious underlying conditions. You should seek immediate medical attention if your back pain is accompanied by any of the following:

    • Sudden weight loss, generally feeling unwell

    • Loss of control of your legs, sudden giving-way of your legs

    • Pain, pins and needles, tingling and numbness in both legs

    • Loss of feeling around your genitals or anus

    • Changes in how your penis or vagina feels during sex, not being able to get or keep an erection, or not being able to orgasm

    • Changes in your bladder or bowels, such as difficulty peeing, or peeing or pooing yourself

Such symptoms could indicate cauda equina syndrome, which concerns the network of nerves that supplies your lower extremities, bowel and bladder.

If you have none of these symptoms, physiotherapy treatment should be safe and effective

  • Sciatica is a pain that runs from the lower back and buttocks down the leg. It may feel:

    • Painful – stabbing, burning or shooting.

    • Tingly – like pins and needles.

    • Numb

    • Weak

If you experience symptoms of sciatica down both legs, any changes to your urinary or bowel control, sexual dysfunction such as difficulty achieving an erection, or numbness around your buttocks and genital area (this may feel like a change in sensation when wiping), go to the hospital immediately. This could be a sign of something more serious.
