Shockwave therapy to aid the body’s natural healing process
Focused and Radial shockwave therapy in Basingstoke
What is shockwave therapy and how can it help?
If you’re struggling with long-term conditions like plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis, Shockwave Therapy offers a non-invasive alternative to injections or surgery. This advanced clinical technology uses sound wave energy to aid the body’s natural healing process.
It is often recommended when other treatments have proven ineffective, especially for persistent or chronic pain. Patients frustrated by a lack of progress finally have a chance to return to living pain-free. My clinic provides both radial and focused shockwave therapy, improving success rates as we target tissues with greater precision.
What are the benefits of shockwave therapy?
There are many benefits of shockwave therapy including:
Non-invasive treatment
Stimulates neovascularisation accelerating the body’s natural healing process
Aids tissue repair and regeneration
Reduces pain

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that aims to reduce pain and promote healing. This is thought to be achieved via several different mechanisms:
Increased blood flow – shockwave therapy increases blood flow to the targeted tissues, improving circulation, increasing the delivery of nutrients that are vital for healing to the area, and enhancing the removal of waste products.
Acute inflammatory response – shockwave therapy induces an acute (sudden, short-term) inflammatory response in the targeted area, initiating the body’s natural healing mechanism.
Cellular activation – shockwave therapy may assist the body in healing by enhancing cell activity, such as producing healing proteins like collagen. However, most current research has been conducted in laboratory and animal studies.
Reduce pain – shockwave therapy may alleviate pain by calming overactive nerves and altering the way pain is processed in the body.
The energy from the sound waves is also thought to help break down adhesions, such as calcium deposits and scar tissue, which can restore normal movement and reduce stiffness in the affected area.

Most patients will require an estimated 3 to 6 sessions (once per week). This number may be increased or decreased depending on the response to the treatment. Treatment should not be more than 2 weeks apart. A follow up appointment is advised approximately 3 months after the date of the final shockwave session to monitor the response.

I will use a machine that turns compressed air into sound waves, and place this on your skin, over the targeted area. Ultrasound gel will be placed on the skin to remove air from between the skin and machine, which aids the transmission of the shockwaves. Shockwave treatment is non-invasive but may cause initial mild discomfort to the area being treated. You will be able to go home straight after this therapy but should avoid any high impact exercises for 48hrs after treatment.

Sometimes the treatment is a bit painful, but most people can normally tolerate this. If you cannot, you can let me know and I will amend the dose to ensure it is well tolerated.

The clinic has both radial and focused shockwave therapy machines. Most physio clinics will only have radial shockwave treatment. Focused shockwave therapy penetrates deeper than radial devices and more accurately at the affected tissues, offering higher success rates for chronic conditions that have failed to respond to other non-invasive treatments.
